Think of the last time you struggled with
something physically challenging. Take a moment and imagine yourself back in
that same situation again now…
“You’ve got this!”

If I stood beside you giving these words of encouragement, would that challenge have seemed easier to tackle? Would you have been more motivated to go the extra mile and achieve greater success?
Yes!
Motivating others has become a key component of my placement. The head coach at The Barbell Academy writes a very well thought-out program to develop clients’ functional fitness. My role is not to modify the programming I deliver to the members. My role is to encourage the members to follow it to the best of their ability. I can do this by providing cues to refine their technique, but I also need to motivate them to put in the effort that will allow for improvement.

Here are 5 motivational tips you can
use to help motivate your members!
5 Ways to Motivate Others
1. Know Them
Do
they respond better to ‘drill sergeant’ or a gentler style of encouragement?
2. Mix it Up
If
you use the same expressions repeatedly they could become less effective.
3. Music
Play
songs they enjoy at a volume that suits the workout.
4. Provide Targets
Let
them know you want them to get _ more reps in the next _ seconds - it makes it tangible.
5. Celebrate Successes
Congratulate
them for their hard work as a form of positive reinforcement.
Feel free to give these a try next time you
see a client struggling with a challenge.

Hey Julia! First of all I think you’re a great motivator and coach. Even away from the gym you bring these skills and it’s awesome! I love too that you have put in things about knowing your client because I feel like a lot of people have a style they stick with no matter the person and as you said, it’s super important to know how clients are motivated. One thing I find too is bringing it to a personal level where you let them know, however you choose to, that you’ve been where they are now in their workout and you know how hard it is. I think that’s important because many people seem to view coaches and personal trainers as people who are untouchable and have absolutely no trouble in the gym and so the mentality can be “I know you can do it, but I can’t’. And while you didn’t mention it in this post I know you do that as well which is great. You’re awesome with motivating people and working with them, keep it up!
