Have you ever wanted to start your own business?
If so, one of the early challenges will be building a solid membership base.
I asked a highly successful gym-owner and
personal trainer:
“What are the keys ways to recruit new
members to your business?”
The Answer:
It’s what you know, who you know, who they
know, and who you are!
“What you know” = Knowledge
“Who you know” = Contacts / Network
“Who they know” = Referrals
“Who you are” = Uniqueness / Personality
A strong knowledge of your subject is
imperative. The saying “fake it ‘til you make it” does not apply here! Members
will be able to tell if you know what you are talking about pretty quickly. Your reputation could be permanently tarnished if the information you teach is unfounded.
Your network does not need to be expansive.
Having a social media presence is enough to attract those looking for your type
of service. You don’t need to obsess over the number of followers you have
because your current clients are much more valuable.
This leads us to the impact of referrals.
Word of mouth is an extremely powerful and often underrated way to boost
membership organically. It costs nothing - unless you wish to offer a small
incentive to members who ‘recruit’ new members. All you need to do is…
Be yourself! This can seem like a
challenging task for someone just starting out. It can be tempting to try to
appeal to all crowds, or a general market, to get the most members. It is
better to let your personality shine through and the right members will be attracted
to that. Figure out what makes you stand out from the crowd and communicate
that through your business!

Hello Julia,
ReplyDeleteIt is always interesting to read your blogs. And this is the most waiting topic to know about. I was always wondering looking some of the instructors and trainers, one question always pop up in my brain how could they reach to such an extreme position and how and when can I reach that place. I was in an assumption that a sound knowledge in the subject is enough to build up the basement, but you have come up with another 3 key factors which are also important to take into account. It's true that faking is impossible in health and fitness related industry. That you for blogging on one of the important topics to be aware of. Hoping to learn more from your blogs.

Hello Julia,
ReplyDeleteI found it very interesting to read your blog and it is the first time that I am reading your blog. now, I have read your all blogs and I found it quite impressive and yes you are a very good writer. I learnt a lot of great things from your blogs and from this blog as well. I think this is the one of the knowable blog that would help me to establish a good relationship and a building block towards success. I came to know that we are always aware of the appropriate knowledge, we have good social media contacts, references but the thing is we are not using them wisely to attain something.
I am sure that I would use your these ideas in my future and from now onwards. the best thing is that you also told us to be the way we are and yes it is important to show up with your real personality not the fake because this world is already full of fake people. Reality of personality will definitely help us to achieve our goals.
Thanks for the wonderful topic.
