Welcome back! I mentioned in my last post that I am doing my Health and Fitness Promotion program internship at The Barbell Academy. This is an amazing facility on Bayfield Street in Barrie that offers:
- CrossFit classes
- Kettlebell & Rowing classes
- Recovery yoga
- Open gym
- Children’s programs (from 2 – 15 years old)
- Personal training
- Full service coffee/espresso bar
What do you look for most in a gym/fitness environment?
Do any of the following come to mind?
- Small class sizes or one-on-one training
- Highly inclusive and friendly community
- Quality weightlifting equipment
- Clean and organized space
- Local coffee/tea/espresso
- Spacious private bathrooms/showers with towel service
If so, The Barbell Academy is a great location to improve your functional fitness and make new friends with similar goals. If you are in the area, I invite you to pop in to check it out for yourself and consider signing up for a month!
I will be responsible for coaching both
CrossFit and Rowing & Kettlebell classes 5-10 times throughout the week,
as well as assisting with the children’s programs on Saturdays.
My primary responsibilities include:
- Programming/leading a warm-up specific to the workout of the day
- Introducing workout movements (demonstrating & verbal explanations)
- Ensuring proper technique/scaling options
- Monitoring for safety
- Encouraging members
- Recording weights/times
I hope to branch out into other areas that I will discuss in my next post!

Hello Julia! Congratulations on getting your placement. Very inspiring and motivating post, it surely encouraged me to visit The Barbell Academy. The services provided by the academy are the one that everyone wants, to make their workout more fun and free from any anxiety. I will definitely turn back to you for the detailed information on children’s program and recovery yoga class as they both are interesting and getting popular. Julia, it’s a big achievement that you conduct your own class in the facility. You must have worked very hard to design the whole program and that is the reason the facility has trusted you. At this point of the diploma, it is quite difficult to tailor the exercises according to the individual’s need, but you are doing it amazingly with keeping safety in the mind. This is what every client needs from the fitness expert. I am sure you will grow and develop in coming days and the facility will handover you some more classes. Good luck!
