The Most Important Skill to Have

https://maiakumarigilman.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/hello-my-name-is.jpg

If you could excel at one skill what would it be?

The first skills that come to my mind are cooking, strength or cardiovascular endurance. Upon further reflection however, my answer would have to be people skills.

In the health and fitness industry, trainers and coaches need to interact with clients on a daily basis. We need to strike a perfect balance between being (1) welcoming/friendly enough to attract clients who can be open, honest, and trust us and (2) firm enough that the client will respond to criticism, put their head down, and get work done – allowing them to achieve the results they deserve.

Perfecting our people skills takes deliberate effort, practice, and a lot of learning from trial and error. I will highlight one very important aspect of my people skills I sought to improve at my placement…

“I’m so sorry I forgot your name…”

I am terrible at remembering names! I feel horrible having to ask people their name the second/third/fourth time I have them in my class. I knew this was a skill I needed to solidify ASAP. At the start of the class I introduce myself and if there is someone I haven’t coached before I will ask their name. I started reading the class list ahead of time and writing everyone’s name up on the whiteboard. If I forget a name I can look back to the board and usually figure it out by process of elimination. I make sure that I use everybody’s name multiple times during the class and as they leave. This has helped substantially, however I also implemented a rule that if I call a client by the wrong name I have to do 10 burpees, just in case!

Let me know your tips for remembering names below! 😊

  1. Hello Julia,

It is always interesting reading your blog. Thank you for letting us know in detail about the Barbell academy in one of your blogs. I would really like to appreciate your effort in learning the names of your clients. I totally agree with you that in this fitness industry its good to address your clients by their names in order to develop a good rapport and gain their confidence. And i also agree with you that its really a tough job to accomplish. Well i have a tip for you to remember your clients name and i hope it would help you. Whenever a client tell his name to you try to address in name once or twice so that it gets registered.

  2. Hi Julia,
Your blogs are more than awesome and motivational in such a less amount of time you are able to achieve that much which makes me feel very motivated and pumped out and the thing you mentioned in your first blog that how you found your passion made me speechless that all you have to do is follow your passion and dreams, right? Although, your blogs are super motivational and kind of professional they sounds like you are writing blogs from very long as the same you mentioned that in your leisure time you used to read fitness blog I think that is why you have a good grasp on blog and for the recent one you are not alone who has names issue there are a lot of other people and which is short of normal you don’t have to worry about it as long as you are providing proper knowledge and helping client to achieve their desired goal they won’t get troubled and I have a suggestion for you in place of remembering their names pick some nick name for them which will be easy for you and interactive to client.
    Cheers!

  3. Hi Julia,

First, I would like to appreciate you for identifying your passion and motivating you towards it. I am glad to know that you are working as a cross-fit coach in the Barbell Academy. Always inspired by your blogs, as they sound very professional and interesting. As you mentioned, I totally agree knowing names is a very important skill to be developed since it make others feel being valued and appreciated. It seems like a simple task but definitely a tough one to achieve. I try to remember by picturing the spelling in my mind as they tell their name since it helps me to register the name quickly. Hope this helps you to know the names. My best wishes and looking forward to more of your fascinating blogs.
